The King Who Would not Wear a Crown
July 22nd is one of the major feast days of the Order. It marks the day in 1099 when the nobles of the First Crusade met after capturing the Holy City of Jerusalem to elect a monarch for their new Christian kingdom. The bravery and piety of Godfrey de Bouillon made him the unanimous choice of the assembled nobility. However, he would not wear a crown of gold in the city where the Saviour wore a crown of thorns, so out of humility Godfrey declined the title of king and reigned simply as Advocatus Sancti Sepulchri (Defender of the Holy Sepulchre).
All Knights and Dames of the Order are called upon to reflect on the noble virtues that made Godfrey the model of Christian chivalry.
